ABOUT
Joseph Simons is a director, writer and choreographer for stage and screen.

As a performer, he has toured throughout USA, Asia, UK and Australia with companies including West Australian Ballet (AusDance Award, title role: Pinocchio), Opera Australia, Chunky Move, Lucy Guerin Inc., Queensland Ballet, Force Majeure, Victorian Opera, Jack Productions, The Australian Ballet and The Production Company. He has performed in development casts for Australian Dance Theatre and DV8 Physical Theatre, London. As an actor, Joseph played Tom in the original London cast of Spider Love by Mick Goldstein and created the role of Malcolm in the world premiere cast of The Death Of Kings by Colette F Keen. Joseph was also in the Australian premiere cast of Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Following his residency at the International Choreographic Laboratory in Frankfurt, and Ada Studios, Berlin, Germany, Joseph’s show First Things First premiered in New York, and earned him an Australian Green Room nomination. He wrote his next play 100 Years Of The History Of Dance As Told By One Man In 60 Minutes With An Energetic Group Finale, which was first developed at Roundabout Theater in New York, before touring extensively across Australia.

Joseph’s choreography has been performed by West Australian Ballet (Man Alive, A Few Moments Of Your Time), Footlight Productions (Miss Saigon), The Seven Sopranos (Popcorn), Matt Ward Entertainment (Mamma Mia!), Queensland University of Technology (Skank: A Tragic Love Story), Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Self Destruct) Queensland Conservatorium (Carousel, Little Women, Company, The Wedding Singer, Legally Blonde, Personals, It’s Only Life, Elegies) Amplified House (Simply Brill) and Flying Fruit Fly Circus (Storm). Joseph was awarded the Tanya Liedtke Fellowship – awarded to one Australian choreographer every two years. In 2026, Joseph was movement director on Season 3 of Austin for ABC television.

Joseph was the Artistic Director of Altitude Theatre in Brisbane, Queensland, where he directed the sold-out and extended production of The Producers, and the sold-out season of Out: Out of the Closet - Into the Spotlight.

In 2022, Joseph began as lecturer in Music Theatre at Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide, designing curriculum for the Bachelor of Music Theatre degree, as well as directing productions including The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Elegies, and Shrek: The Musical.

With Millicent Sarre, Joseph is one half of the writing team Sarre & Simons, currently developing their new musical PRIMETIME, supported by the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Frank Ford Foundation and Creative Australia.
